A Study to Assess the Level of Job Satisfaction among IT Professionals Who are working from Home during the COVID-19 Pandemic at selected IT Company Employees at Chennai, Tamil Nadu

ABSTRACT:

Introduction: A new Novel virus (COVID-19) global pandemic has resulted in changes to information technology many IT professionals forced to work from home. The study deals with Work environment, personal and organizational factors influencing job satisfaction. Satisfied employees are more productive and their well-being in society is good. Job satisfaction has a direct relation to the mental and physical health of an employee. Job dissatisfaction can lead to several problems in one’s life and organization. Employees with low-level job satisfaction may leave their job. So, it is necessary to find out job satisfaction among IT employees. Aim: To assess the level of Job satisfaction among IT professionals working from home during COVID-19 Pandemic outbreak at Chennai. Methods and tools: A quantitative research approach was used in this study. The design was non-experimental descriptive research design. Self-structured questionnaire and self-prepared Likert scale was used to assess the level of job satisfaction among IT professionals working from home during covid-19 pandemic outbreak. Results: The results of the study indicate, 48 (80%) of the IT professionals work from home are having moderate levels of job satisfaction, 8 (13.33%) of them have high level of job satisfaction and 4 (6.67%) have mild level of job satisfaction score. This showed that the majority of IT professionals have moderate level of job satisfaction during Covid-19 work from home environment. Discussion: Job satisfaction is one of the main working from home environmental factor of IT professionals especially due to Covid-19 pandemic. Through this study it was noted that majority of employees have moderate level of job satisfaction. However, it is suggested that more detailed studies can be done among IT professionals proving the levels of job satisfaction. The data were statistically analyzed and the findings were discussed under the objective formulated by the researcher. Therefore, the government and organizations should emphasize on the strategies which can increase the satisfaction of the IT professionals and ultimately decreases the job dissatisfaction.

INTRODUCTION:

The Information Technology industry (IT) has an important role in the Indian economy in the 21st century. The contribution of Information Technology to the economic development of the country and government service to become efficient and responsive is essential. The quick transition to telehealth, telework, and online education brings the digital technology is as crucial1. The contribution of IT professionals in developing products to compact the virus, tracking and predicting its spread, and protecting hospitals from cyber-attacks are mean-worthy6. The pandemic situation lessens the opportunity to study the research and practice of technology in the IT sector such as work practices, design, and use of technologies.

 

NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Achieving and maintaining job satisfaction in IT professionals ultimately leads to productivity. Job satisfaction is considered a good indicator of employee effectiveness8. IT professionals with a high level of job satisfaction hold positive feelings but a low level holds negative feelings18. Employees with low-level job satisfaction may leave their job15. So, it is necessary to find out job satisfaction among IT employees. Hence as an investigator I felt the need for the present study “To assess the levels of Job satisfaction among IT professionals who are working from home during Covid-19 pandemic”.

 

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

A study to assess the level of Job satisfaction among IT professionals who are working from home during the COVID-19 Pandemic at selected IT company employees at Chennai, Tamil Nādu.

 

OBJECTIVES:

Assess the level of Job satisfaction among IT Professionals who are working from home during COVID- 19 Pandemic at Chennai.

Associate the level of job satisfaction among IT professionals who are working from home during COVID-19 pandemic with their selected demographic variables.

 

HYPOTHESIS:

H1: There is a significant association between levels of job satisfaction among IT professionals who are working from home during COVID-19 pandemic with their selected demographic variables.

 

METHODOLOGY:

This chapter describes the research methodology and design used in the study. The research methods including the research setting, study population, sample and sampling, phases of the study, the data collection instrument and data collection as well as the validity and reliability are described. Research methodology involves the system procedure by which the researcher starts from the identification of the problem to its final conclusion. It involves steps, procedure and strategies for gathering and analysing data in a research investigation.

 

Research Approach:

The research approach was used in this study is quantitative research approach.

 

Research Design:

The research design for this study was non-experimental, descriptive design.

 

Setting of the Study:

This study was conducted in the selected IT companies at Chennai.

 

Population:

In the present study, the population is IT Professionals working from home.

 

Sample:

In this study the sample comprised of IT Professionals of selected IT Companies at Chennai who are working from home during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The sample was selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria.

 

Sample size:

The sample size of the study was 60 IT Professionals who were working from home during

the COVID-19 Pandemic.

 

Sampling Technique:

The sampling technique was adopted in this study is a non-probability convenience sampling technique.

 

Criteria for Sample Selection:

In the study, IT Professionals working from home during COVID -19 Pandemic were the eligible population. The study sample were selected based on the following inclusion and exclusion criteria

 

Data Collection Procedure:

Assuring the safety of respondents and keeping the paradigm in mind, the best possible way in this current situation is the online surveying approach to collect the data. Participants were selected by convenience sampling method through email. Participants accepted a Google form link, inviting them to take part in the optional survey and containing a brief explanation of the purpose of the study. Clicking on the link, the first page presented as an informed consent notice, highlighting the purpose of the study, the procedure of the study, contact information, and the rights of participants. The consent notice also assured the participants that information gathered in the study would be kept anonymous and accessible only to the researcher. Then administering a self-prepared structured too with 2 parts (demographic and WFH job satisfaction questions). A structured questionnaire developed by the researcher was used as the instrument for data collection for the study. Approximately participants took 10-15 minutes to complete the data. There were 60 samples collected from 28/07/2021 to 05/08/2021   through a Google form questionnaire.

 

Plan for Data Analysis:

Data analysis was done on the basis of objectives and hypothesis stated in the study using descriptive and inferential statistics. Chi-square was used to find association of job satisfaction level with selected socio -personal variables.

 

RESULTS:

The table 1 shows that the majority 48(80%) of the IT professionals had moderate level of job satisfaction, 8 (13.33%) had higher level of job satisfaction and 4 (6.67%) often had mild level of job satisfaction.

 

DISCUSSION:

In the study group majority of samples 48 (80%) were in the age group of 30-39 years and gender 43 (71.67%) of the samples become male, coming to the marital status 45 (75%) of the samples belongs to married. In income per annum 28 (46.67%) of the samples had 7.5-10 lakh. In current living status 47 (78.33%) of the samples are staying with spouses. The number of children 25 (41.67%) of the samples had one child. 32 (53.33%) of the samples belongs to joint family. 48 (80%) of the samples are working in the mid-management position in the organization. 30 (50%) of the samples are having 5-9 years’ experience. 38 (63.33%) of the samples are working 40-60 hours per week.

 

Majority of IT professionals had moderate level of job satisfaction during work-from-home environment, similar to findings reported by Fonner and Roloff10. Job satisfaction has strong relation with mental and physical health as reported in previous studies19,21. Work-life balance issues during Covid-19 have also been reported to reduce satisfaction3,11,15. Workers with low satisfaction are more likely to leave the job9,15.

 

CONCLUSION:

The study was conducted to assess the level of job satisfaction among IT professionals work from home during covid-19 pandemic at Chennai. The finding of the study result shows that the IT professionals are having moderate level of job satisfaction at work from home environment during the covid-19 pandemic. Therefore, government and organization should emphasize on the strategies which can increase the job satisfactions of the IT professionals and ultimately improving the performance.

 

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Various medical programs should be arranged to find out the job dissatisfaction and to solve them early. A similar study can be undertaken for a large sample using different settings.
